With the Illumitran (which incorporates the exclusive Bowens Contrast Control Unit), your scope is widened dramatically. The CCU has three switch-controlled ranges of flashing exposure, each of which are continuously variable, calibrated and neon-lit for repeatability and notation. So you can really fine tune contrast, a distinct advantage when you make instant prints or internegatives from slides.

Equally important, you can choose from a much wider range of films than can be used with a conventional slide duplicator. Instead of being limited to special "dupe" films with close-to-unity contrast gradients, you can also copy on the more readily available conventional emulsions which offer higher contrast.

Because the CCU has its own filter drawer, you can match it either to daylight- or tungsten-balanced films and you can modify the coloration of shadow areas without visibly affecting the highlights. This offers a convenient way of curing "crossovers" on original slides without having to resort to cumbersome masking procedures.

And, since the CCU is separately powered and controlled, you're not limited to using cameras which mount on the bellows.
